New York City is referred to as the City of New York to distinguish it from State of New York of which it is also a part. It is also known as a global power city New York exerts significant impact upon the commerce, media, finance, research, art, fashion, education, technology and entertainment. The home of United Nations Headquarters New York is important center for the international diplomacy and has also been described as cultural capital of world.
New York City is located on one of world’s largest natural harbors. New York City consists of around five boroughs each of which is County of the New York State. The five boroughs known as Brooklyn, The Bronx, Queens, Manhattan and Staten Island were also consolidated into single city in the year 1898. Times Square has highest annual attendance rate of tourist attraction in USA and according to the Travel and Leisure magazine’s survey of October 2011 tourism is one of New York’s vital industries with more than 40 million domestic and international tourists visiting every year in past five years.
Major destinations include Ellis Island ,Empire State Building, Statue of Liberty, Broadway theater productions; museums like the Metropolitan Museum of Art, green spaces like the Central Park and the Washington Square Park, Times Square, Rockefeller Center, Manhattan Chinatown, luxury shopping along the Fifth and the Avenues and events like the Halloween Parade held in Greenwich Village, Macy’s Thanksgiving Day Parade, lighting of the Rockefeller Center Christmas Tree, St.
Patrick’s Day parade, the seasonal activities like as ice skating in the Central Park during the wintertime, Tribeca Film Festival and some free performances in the Central Park at Summer stage. Special experiences outside key tourist areas of city include Coney Island, Bronx Zoo, New York Botanical Garden and the Flushing Meadows-Corona Park. Some plans were unveiled by Mayor Michael Bloomberg on 27 September 2012 for New York Wheel which is the world’s tallest Ferris wheel to be built at northern shore of the Staten Island, overlooking New York Harbor, Statue of Liberty and the Lower Manhattan skyline. In the year 2010 New York City received around 49 million tourists and subsequently surpassed by record 50 million tourists in the year 2011.
